Seminar on "Minority Rights in India: Vision and Reality", Dept.of Pol Science A.M.U Aligarh

The Department of Political Science, Aligarh Muslim University, is pleased to announce the holding of a national seminar on ??Minority Rights in India: Vision and Reality?? on 14th & 15th November 2011 at Aligarh and invites papers from academics, jurists, policy makers, analysts, practitioners, civil society representatives, and researchers for presentation during the seminar on the following themes/sub?themes. The themes/sub?themes are not exhaustive, rather indicative only.

1. Minority Rights and Framing of Indian Constitution ?C Revisiting unkept Promises.
2. Concept of Minority ?C Definitional Dilemma.
3. Secularism and Contexutalising Minority Rights.
4. Educational and Cultural Rights- Constitutional Position, State Intervention and Judicial Response;
Minority Status of Aligarh Muslim University and Jamia Millia Islamia.
5. Right to Freedom of Religion ?C Scope and Limits; Religious Conversion and Freedom of Religion.
6. Communal Riots/Pogrom and Minorities?? Right to Physical Existence; The Role of State and Police during Communal Violence.
7. Institutional Mechanisms for Protecting Minority Rights - National Commission for Minorities;
National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions.
8. Rights of Linguistic Minorities; Status of Minority Languages; Urdu and Law and Politics of Minority
Languages.
9. Empowerment of Minorities; Question of Reservation for Minorities ?C Possibilities and Hurdles.

Keeping in view your expertise and interest in issues related to Minority Rights we would like to request you to contribute your paper on any of the themes/sub themes or any other topic which falls within the broad framework of the Seminar. We are confident that your participation would indeed be productive, enriching and stimulating.

The seminar papers would be brought out as an edited volume. Authors are therefore requested to submit the revised version of their papers in electronic form within one month following the seminar so that the proceedings can be published at the earliest.
